North Metropolitan TAFE’s Radio Broadcasting program and BOOM Radio station is leading the way with former and current students winning national awards, commencing a career at Canberra’s biggest station and hosting a national radio program.

Current HIT Network Bunbury host and NMTAFE 2017 alumni, Ben Carney began hosting the nation-wide ‘The Saturday Night Party Playlist’ with Nathan Bongiovanni on 1 March.  It is the first time a show coming out of regional Western Australia has been heard in all 50 markets across the country.

Advanced Diploma student, Prea Cunningham will be joining HIT 104.7 and Mix 106.3 in Canberra later this month as their Campaign Coordinator, a phenomenal first opportunity for a soon-to-be graduate, with most starting their careers in a regional station.  Prea will complete her Advanced Diploma studies this semester from Canberra.

In addition, 2014 alumni Jodie Williams was announced as a winner of Radio Today’s 30 Under 30 Awards late last year.  Jodie, now a music director at NOVA Entertainment in Sydney, was selected in the 30 most promising young people climbing up the ranks in radio, audio and podcasting.

Radio Lecturer Phill Vinciullo said it was no secret to him the success of NMTAFE’s radio program which operates its own station, BOOM Radio.

“Prior to COVID, on average more than 80 per cent of our graduates were recruited by industry after graduating,” he said.

“In a period where media and entertainment has been greatly affected by COVID-19, it’s incredibly exciting to see our industry partners still turning to our course and students like Prea as well as our past graduates for positions.”

“It is a great achievement from the trio and shows what our students can achieve if they work hard in their chosen field.”

Ben said it was a blast to be given the chance to put their own ideas to air across the nation after graduating from NMTAFE just four years ago.

“It is not lost on us that two blokes in Bunbury get to have fun every Saturday night with people listening to us on iconic stations [around Australia],” he said.
