Get Into Resources

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

North Metropolitan TAFE’s (NMTAFE) East Perth campus was buzzing with more than 600 secondary students walking through the doors to explore their future career options in Western Australia’s (WA’s) resources sector from 25 to 27 June.

The annual Get Into Resources(opens in a new tab) event, kicked off its three-day program with informative talks and hands-on activities, aimed at introducing high school students to the resources industry with over 150 career opportunities available.

Students had the opportunity to engage directly with professionals, progress through a range of activities, and experience firsthand what it’s like to work in the resources sector.

Students were organised into small groups and then embarked on a journey through various interactive workshops and demonstrations led by industry experts. From technical roles to trade pathways, there was something for everyone.

Students eagerly participated in activities lead by NMTAFE lecturers in cyber security, big data, automation, laboratory operations and surveying, along with activities from mining and resource industry companies. Each activity was carefully constructed to provide insights into different aspects of the resources industry.

Industry professionals, who volunteered were instrumental in making the event a success. They shared their expertise and passion with students, informing them about what was possible career wise.

For sponsors like major mining and resources companies, Get Into Resources represents an opportunity to support community engagement and connect with future talent early on.

NMTAFE Managing Director, Michelle Hoad, presented the event’s Diamond sponsors BHP, Barminco, Mineral Resources, Rio Tinto and Northern Star Resources with a trophy to recognise their commitment to student engagement and workforce development.
