Our student enrolments have increased in a range of priority courses thanks to the ‘lower fees, local skills’ initiative.

  • Fees for over 20 courses offered at NMTAFE have been slashed in commercial cookery, hospitality, cyber security, engineering, health and community services.
  • Today Premier Mark McGowan, Minister for Training and Education Sue Ellery and Emily Hamilton MLA joined our Managing Director Michelle Hoad to meet with commercial cookery and hospitality students who have benefitted from the half-price fees.

The group toured the Pavilion Restaurant at our Joondalup campus, an à la carte restaurant operated by students and open to the public. This real-life training environment is where the next star chefs, wait staff and front of house staff cut their teeth.

"There are some fantastic career opportunities for chefs and cooks, but to get those top jobs you will need a qualification and be job-ready,” said Minister for Education and Training Sue Ellery.

"It is wonderful to see these young people at the start of their careers, getting the skills they need for future jobs, without having to pay substantial course fees,” she continued.

Hospitality students Tegan Wilkinson and Sadie Marriott showed the group their barista talents before assisting the Premier to brew a latte. While cookery student Amy Van Der Weide showed off her knife skills.

"My Government has made TAFE a priority, and the early enrolment figures for our 50 per cent cut to TAFE fees are very encouraging,” said Premier Mark McGowan.
