Understanding apprenticeships and traineeships

Apprenticeships and traineeships play a vital role in the State’s economy; skilled workers across a range of trades and occupations are in high demand.

At the completion of an Apprenticeship the RTO will award an AQF qualification and the Apprenticeship Office will award the Trade Certificate, and the person is considered qualified in their trade. 

At completion of a Traineeship a person receives a certificate qualification as evidence of their skills. 

The Department of Training and Workforce Development's (DTWD) Apprenticeship Office registers and administers training contracts and regulates the apprenticeship system in Western Australia, in accordance with Part 7 of the Vocational Education and Training Act(opens in a new tab) 1996 (the Act) and the associated Regulations(opens in a new tab) .

*The term apprentice is an umbrella term referring to apprentices, trainees, interns or cadets and the term apprenticeship will refer to contract arrangements for an apprenticeship, traineeship, cadetship or internship, unless specified otherwise.
