Wear It Purple Day

Write your story

Being an ally is a life-long commitment.Together, we can create an inclusive and welcoming environment for every LGBTQIA+ person we know, on and off campus.

What is Wear It Purple Day?

North Metropolitan TAFE is thrilled to announce our participation in Wear It Purple Day on Friday, 25 August 2023, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by young LGBTQIA+ individuals and promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Our steadfast commitment to diversity, equality, and empowerment aligns seamlessly with the values of Wear It Purple Day, making it a vital opportunity for us to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Why do we wear purple?

On August 25, 2023, Wear It Purple Day encourages individuals and organisations to proudly wear purple attire as a symbol of solidarity and support for LGBTQIA+ youth, who often face unique struggles in their journey toward self-acceptance and understanding.

By participating in this day, NMTAFE aims to send a powerful message of inclusivity and promote an environment where every student and staff member feels safe, respected, and valued for who they are.

What is the theme for 2023?

This year’s theme, Write Your Story, is created by Wear It Purple’s Youth Action Council (YAC) to give voice to growing rhetoric in the LGBTQIA+ youth community around the importance of personal expression and individuality.

NMTAFE recognises the critical importance of providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth to express themselves, share their experiences, and provide resources that promote mental health and wellbeing.

So how can we show our support?

NMTAFE encourages staff, students and our community to show their support by wearing purple on the day (Dockers supporters, this is your chance!) and engage in meaningful conversations.

There will be an interactive Standing In Solidarity A1 Board to complete on the day. This will be at Client Services on every campus so come along and write your messages of love, hope, support and encouragement to our LGBTQIA+ rainbow young people at TAFE, and in our lives.

This event is held across all nine campuses so there will be a significant presence. Please remember to take lots of photos.

By standing together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth and create a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear. Happy Wear It Purple Day everyone!
